Identify the Portuguese certificate you hold

The Portuguese Ministry of Justice operates the Certificado do Registo Criminal Online service. Its official portal describes requesting, obtaining and cancelling the certificate access code and checking the status and validity information associated with a certificate, and names the Direção de Serviços de Identificação Criminal (DSIC), within the Direção-Geral da Administração da Justiça (DGAJ), as responsible for issuing certificates. Source: registocriminal.justica.gov.pt, portal page last updated 25 June 2026, checked 9 September 2026.

    • Check the document title printed on your certificate and the issuing body named on it — this page covers the certificate issued in Portugal
    • Brazil's certidão de antecedentes criminais is a different document issued in a different country; see our separate Brazil page
    • In Portugal, the official portal names DSIC, within DGAJ, as responsible for issuing certificates
    • The online service works with a certificate access code; prepare a complete, legible copy of the certificate for translation, as the access code alone does not provide the document text
    • Portuguese guidance states that the digital certificate and the paper certificate have the same legal value — see justica.gov.pt
    • Check any validity or status information associated with your certificate, and the receiving organisation's recency requirements for your particular submission
    • Obtaining the certificate, authenticating it and translating it are separate steps — check the receiving organisation's instructions to establish which steps apply

Issued by: Direção de Serviços de Identificação Criminal (DSIC), within the Direção-Geral da Administração da Justiça (DGAJ)

    NAATI Certification

Preparing your certificado do registo criminal for translation

We provide English translations of Portuguese criminal-record certificates by NAATI-certified translators. Send a complete, legible copy of the certificate, including every page and any headers, footers, reference numbers, seals, codes or verification details printed on it. If names or dates differ between your documents, flag the difference before translation rather than altering an official record. TransLingo translates the record you supply: we do not issue, obtain, verify, notarise or apostille Portuguese criminal-record certificates, and the organisation receiving your documents decides what it requires.

    • Translated by a NAATI-certified translator, with stamp, signature and certification number
    • The certificate reproduced in full, not summarised
    • Send a complete, legible copy of every page, including anything printed on the reverse
    • Give us the spelling of your name as it appears on your passport so differences can be flagged
