Documents required at Stage 1 — Temporary partner visa (subclass 820 or 309)

At the initial stage of a partner visa application, the Department of Home Affairs assesses your identity, your relationship, and your character. Documents commonly requiring certified translation at this stage include:

    • Birth certificate — to confirm identity.
    • Marriage certificate (if married) — to confirm the relationship.
    • Divorce certificate (if previously married) — required from both applicant and sponsor where a previous marriage existed.
    • Police clearance certificate — from every country where you or your sponsor have lived for 12 months or more.
    • Passport bio page — for identity verification.
    • Employment letters and financial documents — to support the relationship timeline.

All documents not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.

Documents required at Stage 2 — Permanent partner visa (subclass 801 or 100)

The permanent stage of the partner visa is usually assessed automatically after two years, or sooner if the relationship is recognised as genuine. Additional documents commonly required at Stage 2 include:

    • Updated police clearance certificates — from any new countries of residence since Stage 1.
    • Evidence of ongoing relationship — financial records, joint documents, statutory declarations from witnesses.
    • Updated identity documents where passports or other documents have been renewed or reissued.

Any new documents in Spanish must again be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.
