Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482 — document translation guide

The Subclass 482 visa allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers in approved occupations. Certified translations may be required for qualification, identity and work-history documents not in English. For the latest requirements, always check homeaffairs.gov.au.

Who Is the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482 Generally For?

The Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill genuine skill shortages in their business. It replaced the Subclass 457 visa in March 2018. The Subclass 482 has two main streams: Short-term stream — for occupations on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Grants a visa for up to 2 years (or up to 4 years for countries with a Free Trade Agreement with Australia). Can generally only be renewed once.

Medium-term stream — for occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Grants a visa for up to 4 years. After 3 years, holders may be eligible to apply for the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) via the Temporary Residence Transition stream. Labour Agreement stream — for workers sponsored under a Labour Agreement between an employer and the Australian Government.

Three-step process: (1) employer approved as Standard Business Sponsor, (2) occupation and position approved through a nomination, (3) worker lodges the visa application. Requirements: occupation on the relevant list, at least 2 years of relevant work experience, meeting skills and English language requirements, health and character requirements. When are certified translations required? Qualification certificates, academic transcripts, employment references, and police clearance certificates not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.

    • Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.

    • Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.

    • Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).

    • Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.

    • Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.

    • Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
