Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 — document translation guide
The Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) is a permanent visa for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, with faster processing than the Subclass 103. For the latest requirements, always check homeaffairs.gov.au.
Who Is the Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 Generally For?
The Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) is a permanent visa for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. It is the faster-processing counterpart to the standard Parent Visa (Subclass 103). The Subclass 143 requires payment of a significantly higher second instalment visa application charge (currently in the range of AUD 29,000–43,000 per adult applicant — always check homeaffairs.gov.au for current fees). In exchange, processing times are substantially shorter than the Subclass 103.
The pathway typically involves two stages: first applying for the temporary Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173), which is granted while the permanent Subclass 143 is being assessed. Once the permanent Subclass 143 is granted, the second instalment charge becomes payable. Balance of family test: the same test applies — at least half of the applicant's children must live permanently in Australia, or more children live in Australia than in any other single country. Assurance of Support is also required.
When are certified translations required? Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and police clearances not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.
Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.
Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.
Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).
Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.
Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.
Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
