Who Is the Training Visa Subclass 407 Generally For?

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows people to come to Australia to participate in occupational training to improve their work-related skills, or to participate in professional development training. The Subclass 407 covers three activity types: (1) Occupational training for registration or licensing — for people who need Australian work experience or training to obtain registration or licensing in their profession in Australia or their home country, such as overseas-trained doctors, nurses, teachers, and engineers.

    (2) Occupational training to improve skills — for people undertaking structured workplace-based training in their current occupation. (3) Capacity building training — for people participating in training that builds the skills and capacity of government or organisations in their home country, typically sponsored by an Australian government agency.

Applicants must be sponsored by an approved business sponsor or government agency. The training must be structured, workplace-based, and supervised — it cannot be simply on-the-job work. The visa is typically granted for up to 2 years. When are certified translations required? Qualifications, professional registration certificates, and employment records not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.

    • Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.

    • Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.

    • Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).

    • Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.

    • Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.

    • Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
