Working Holiday Visa Subclass 417 — document translation guide

The Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) allows young adults from eligible countries to have an extended holiday in Australia while working to supplement their travel funds. For the latest requirements, always check homeaffairs.gov.au.

Who Is the Working Holiday Visa Subclass 417 Generally For?

The Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) allows young adults from eligible countries to have an extended holiday in Australia while working to supplement their travel funds. Eligible applicants must hold a passport from one of the designated eligible countries, which currently includes the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and several others. Most Latin American countries are NOT eligible for the Subclass 417 — applicants from those countries should check the Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Visa instead.

Age requirement: applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at time of application — some countries allow up to 35. The Subclass 417 allows a stay of up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending to a second year (and potentially a third year) by completing specified periods of regional work in eligible industries such as agriculture, horticulture, mining, construction, and bushfire recovery.

Work rights: holders can work for any employer but are generally limited to 6 months with the same employer (some exceptions apply). When are certified translations required? The Subclass 417 application requires minimal documentation. If extending to a second or third year based on regional work, employment evidence not in English would require a NAATI-certified translation.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.

    • Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.

    • Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.

    • Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).

    • Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.

    • Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.

    • Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
