Student Visa Subclass 500 — document translation guide
The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the primary visa for international students undertaking full-time study at a registered Australian institution. Applicants commonly need certified translations of academic and identity documents. For the latest requirements, always check homeaffairs.gov.au.
Who Is the Student Visa Subclass 500 Generally For?
The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the primary visa for international students coming to Australia to undertake full-time study at a CRICOS-registered institution. It covers all levels of study including primary school, secondary school, vocational education and training (VET), English language courses (ELICOS), higher education (bachelor, honours, masters and doctoral degrees), and non-award courses.
To be eligible, applicants must have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider. They must also satisfy the Genuine Student (GS) requirement by demonstrating that their purpose is genuinely to study and that they intend to comply with visa conditions. Financial capacity is a key requirement — applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living costs, and return travel. English language proficiency is required for most courses, demonstrated through IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or OET.
Health insurance is compulsory — all student visa holders must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Health and character requirements apply, including police clearance certificates from all countries where the applicant has lived for 12 months or more since turning 16. Work rights: Student visa holders can generally work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, with unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. When are certified translations required? Academic documents, identity documents, and financial evidence not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.
Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.
Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.
Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).
Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.
Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.
Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
