What Australian decision makers expect from Portuguese-speaking applicants

These are the Portuguese documents most often required for this pathway. Missing translations are one of the most common causes of a request for further information.

    • Degree certificate and any diploma supplement or annexe
    • Full academic transcript with the grading legend
    • Employment references, contracts and official employment records
    • Payslips or state insurance records corroborating employment dates
    • Professional registration certificates for regulated occupations

    NAATI Certification

What is a NAATI Certified Translation?

Assessors reject bundles where an employer letter and an official record disagree. We translate both without reconciling them, and flag the discrepancy to you before certification so you can address it in your submission. Portuguese names carry multiple surnames and diacritics (ã, ç, õ, é) that Australian systems routinely strip, and Brazilian certidões are reissued with a new emission date each time they are requested. We reproduce names exactly as printed and add a translator's note where the spelling differs from your passport.

    • Commonly required for Department of Home Affairs applications
    • Used for university, government and employment submissions
    • Includes the translator's certification statement and details

    Frequently asked questions

What the decision maker is assessing

Assessing authorities such as VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, ACS, TRA, CPA Australia and AHPRA compare your qualification content and employment duties to Australian standards. They apply their own equivalence rules, so the translation's job is to reproduce the original faithfully — including grading scales and credit values — rather than to interpret it.

Documents most often translated for this pathway

    • Award certificate with the qualification title as issued
    • Complete academic transcript with the grading legend and credit values
    • Course syllabus or subject outlines where content mapping is required
    • Employment references stating position, dates, hours and duties
    • Independent employment or social-insurance records corroborating those dates
    • Professional registration or licence certificates for regulated occupations

    Portuguese specifics for this application

Assessors reviewing Brazilian and Portuguese qualifications look for the MEC or DGES registration on the diploma and for contact hours or ECTS on the transcript. Where a Portuguese suplemento ao diploma is already bilingual, only the Portuguese-only fields need translating — we will tell you when that applies rather than charging for the page.

Portuguese naming convention places the mother's surname before the father's, so a person routinely carries three or four surnames and Australian forms truncate them inconsistently. Diacritics — ã, õ, ç, é, á — are stripped by Australian databases, turning Conceição into Conceicao. Brazilian documents cite a CPF and often an RG issued by a specific state; Portuguese documents cite a número de identificação civil and NIF. Dates run day/month/year, and Brazilian certidões carry both the event date and the later emission date, which case officers sometimes mistake for the date of birth or marriage.

    Order of work and timing

Translate the qualification bundle as a single order so terminology, institution names and dates stay consistent across every page. Employment evidence follows, and any additional documents the assessor requests are added to the same file so the whole bundle reads as one coherent submission.

    Where these applications stall

    • Grades converted to an Australian scale in the translation, which assessors treat as interference with the source document
    • Duty statements paraphrased towards ANZSCO wording rather than translated literally
    • The award translated without the transcript, when almost every assessor requires both together
    • Submitting a Brazilian certidão issued years ago when the receiving agency wants a recently emitted copy — the emission date, not the event date, is what they read
    • Dropping surnames between the certidão and the passport, which reads to Home Affairs as a name discrepancy rather than a formatting choice
