Why your histórico escolar must be translated

Australian authorities only accept documents written in English, or documents accompanied by a NAATI-certified English translation. Your histórico escolar establishes subjects studied, credit load and grades, and it is relied on across the following processes.

    • Required for skills assessments with VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, ACS and TRA
    • Needed for university admission and credit transfer
    • Used for points-tested visas where qualifications are claimed
    • Required for professional registration in regulated occupations
    • Needed where a degree was completed only partly at the issuing institution

    NAATI Certification

What is a NAATI Certified Translation?

A NAATI-certified translation carries the translator's stamp, signature and certification number, and reproduces the source document in full rather than summarising it. Portuguese names carry multiple surnames and diacritics (ã, ç, õ, é) that Australian systems routinely strip, and Brazilian certidões are reissued with a new emission date each time they are requested. We reproduce names exactly as printed and add a translator's note where the spelling differs from your passport.

    • Commonly required for Department of Home Affairs applications
    • Used for university, government and employment submissions
    • Includes the translator's certification statement and details

    Frequently asked questions

Who issues a academic transcript in Brazil and Portugal

A Brazilian histórico escolar comes from the university's secretaria and lists each disciplina with its carga horária in hours and a grade out of ten. Portuguese transcripts use ECTS credits and a 0–20 scale. Assessors need the hours or credits and the scale legend preserved, so we reproduce both rather than converting to an Australian equivalent.

Portuguese-language civil-status documents reach us from two very different systems. Brazilian certidões are issued by a Cartório de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais — a privately operated but state-delegated registry — and are reprinted on security paper with a new emission date, a selo digital and a validation code each time you request one. Portuguese records come from a Conservatória do Registo Civil under the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, usually as a narrative certidão de narrativa completa or an EU multilingual extract. Documents from Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde and Timor-Leste follow the older Portuguese narrative format and are frequently typewritten.

What your certified English translation reproduces

Every certified translation we issue is a complete rendering of the source document — not a summary. For a Portuguese academic transcript that means:

    • Every subject or unit name, the period studied and the result recorded
    • Credit values and the local grading scale, reproduced with the scale legend
    • Cumulative averages and any classification or honours statement
    • Enrolment and completion dates, mode of study and language of instruction where stated
    • Institution name, faculty, registrar signature and page-of-page numbering
    • Verification codes or online-verification references printed on the document

    Portuguese names, dates and script

Portuguese naming convention places the mother's surname before the father's, so a person routinely carries three or four surnames and Australian forms truncate them inconsistently. Diacritics — ã, õ, ç, é, á — are stripped by Australian databases, turning Conceição into Conceicao. Brazilian documents cite a CPF and often an RG issued by a specific state; Portuguese documents cite a número de identificação civil and NIF. Dates run day/month/year, and Brazilian certidões carry both the event date and the later emission date, which case officers sometimes mistake for the date of birth or marriage.

    Seals, stamps and legalisation

Expect a cartório stamp, the registrar's signature, a selo de fiscalização with its own serial number and, on recent Brazilian documents, a QR code linking to the online validation service. Both Brazil and Portugal are Hague Apostille states: Brazilian apostilles are applied by notaries authorised under the CNJ, Portuguese ones by the Procuradoria-Geral da República. Older Brazilian records from small municipal cartórios are handwritten in cursive, and where a field is genuinely illegible we mark it rather than guess.

How Australian agencies read this document

Skills assessors and universities read transcripts to map subject content and credit load to Australian equivalents. Grading-scale legends are translated rather than converted, because the assessor applies its own conversion.

Required by VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, ACS, TRA, CPA Australia and CA ANZ, by universities assessing credit transfer and admission, and by AHPRA for regulated health qualifications.

    What we check before certifying

Most delays are caused by the source document, not the translation. These are the issues we look for on Portuguese academic transcripts and raise with you before the file is certified:

    • Submitting a Brazilian certidão issued years ago when the receiving agency wants a recently emitted copy — the emission date, not the event date, is what they read
    • Dropping surnames between the certidão and the passport, which reads to Home Affairs as a name discrepancy rather than a formatting choice
    • Leaving the apostille or the cartório validation page out of the scan, so the legalisation chain looks incomplete
    • Assuming a Portuguese EU multilingual extract needs no translation — Australian agencies still require a NAATI-certified English version
    • Submitting a results summary instead of the full transcript listing every subject
    • Multi-page transcripts uploaded out of order or with a page missing, which breaks the credit total
    • Converting foreign grades to an Australian scale — assessors treat that as tampering, so we reproduce the original scale

    Pages, pricing and turnaround

Transcripts are the most page-heavy document we handle; a full degree transcript often runs four to eight pages at $59 per page. The exact count is confirmed on upload, and multi-page bundles are delivered within 24 hours like any other complete order.
