Chinese Translation — Skilled Visa
Chinese Translation for Australian Skilled Visas (Subclass 189/190/491)
Points-tested skilled visas are audited claim by claim. For Chinese applicants that means every year of experience and every qualification must be provable from 学位证, 毕业证, 成绩单, 在职证明 and 社保 records — each one readable in certified English.
Why skilled applicants need the whole employment trail translated
Points for skilled employment are only awarded where the work can be verified. Chinese employment evidence is usually spread across an employment letter, social insurance records and payroll documents, and an assessor needs all three to accept a claimed period.
- 学位证 and 毕业证 are separate documents in China — both are usually required by the assessing authority
- 成绩单 transcripts are translated with the grading scale so the marks can be interpreted correctly
- 在职证明 employment letters are translated with company chop, dates and position intact
- 社保 social insurance records corroborate the exact months of claimed employment
- The same certified translation can be reused for VETASSESS, EA, ACS, TRA or AHPRA and for Home Affairs
- Ministry of Education verification reports (学信网 / CDGDC) are translated alongside the certificates
NAATI Certification
What is a NAATI Certified Translation?
Skills assessment authorities and Home Affairs both require documents in English or accompanied by a certified translation. Because points claims are frozen at the date of invitation, a translation error found late — a mistranslated employment date, for instance — can cost points that cannot be recovered.
- Commonly required for Department of Home Affairs applications
- Used for university, government and employment submissions
- Includes the translator's certification statement and details

Frequently asked questions
What the decision maker is assessing
Skilled migration under subclass 189, 190 and 491 is points tested, and each claimed point must be evidenced. The decision maker cross-checks your skills assessment, your employment history and your identity documents against each other, so internal consistency across translations matters as much as the content of any single one.
Documents most often translated for this pathway
- Degree certificate and full academic transcript for the qualification claimed
- Employment references and independent employment records for every claimed period
- Police clearance certificates for each country of 12 months' residence
- Birth certificate and passport bio page for identity
- Marriage certificate and partner's qualification documents where partner points are claimed
- Registration or licensing certificates for regulated occupations
Chinese specifics for this application
Chinese skilled applicants need both the 毕业证书 and the 学位证书, the transcript, and social-insurance records that corroborate the employer letters. ACS in particular scrutinises employment dates against independent evidence.
Chinese names are written family name first in simplified characters, with pinyin romanisation on the passport. The same character set can produce different pinyin across Mandarin and Cantonese conventions, and Hong Kong and Taiwan documents use traditional characters. Dates are written year-month-day, and the identity card number encodes date of birth and region.
Order of work and timing
Qualifications and employment records are translated first because the skills assessment depends on them, and the skills assessment must be positive before the EOI can be lodged. Police certificates are ordered after the invitation, so they remain current when the case officer reaches the file.
Where these applications stall
- Employment dates in the translated reference conflicting with the independent contribution record
- Claiming partner points without translating the partner's qualification and English evidence
- A skills assessment obtained on one spelling of your name and a visa lodged on another
- Ordering a second translation without first checking whether the existing English pages meet the receiving organisation's request
- A hukou booklet where only the personal page is scanned, when the household relationship pages are what evidence the family link
The Chinese skilled visa document bundle
What we translate most often for 189, 190 and 491 applicants, both for the skills assessment and for the visa application itself.
Degree certificate 学位证
Awarded separately from the graduation certificate in China; assessing authorities usually want both.
Graduation certificate 毕业证
Confirms completion of the program and the awarding institution.
Academic transcript 成绩单
Translated with subject names and the grading key so credit can be assessed.
Employment letter 在职证明
Position, dates, hours and duties — the core of any skilled employment points claim.
Social insurance record 社保记录
Independent corroboration of the months you were actually employed.
Police clearance 无犯罪记录证明
Character evidence, ordered close to lodgement because of its limited validity.
Order of preparation
- 1Translate qualifications and transcripts first — the skills assessment gates everything else.
- 2Match each claimed employment period to both an 在职证明 and a 社保 record before lodging.
- 3Reuse the same certified translations for the assessing authority and for Home Affairs.
- 4Leave the 无犯罪记录证明 until you are close to lodgement so it does not expire while you wait for an invitation.
