Visitor Visa Subclass 600 — document translation guide

The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a temporary visa for people travelling to Australia as a tourist, to visit family, for business visitor activities, or under a sponsored or approved arrangement. Stays of up to 3, 6 or 12 months can be granted, depending on the decision-maker. For the latest requirements and current fees, always check homeaffairs.gov.au.

Who Is the Visitor Visa Subclass 600 Generally For?

The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) has five streams set by the Department of Home Affairs: Tourist stream (for holidays, recreation or to visit family and friends — applied for outside or inside Australia), Sponsored Family stream (sponsored by an eligible Australian relative; a security bond may be required), Business Visitor stream (for short-term business activities such as attending conferences, negotiations or exploratory business visits — no work for an Australian employer), Approved Destination Status (ADS) stream (for travellers from the People's Republic of China in an approved tour group), and Frequent Traveller stream (for eligible Chinese passport holders needing long-validity multiple-entry travel).

Most Spanish-speaking applicants from Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador and other Latin American countries apply under the Tourist stream, because they are not eligible for the Subclass 601 ETA or the Subclass 651 eVisitor. Sponsored Family stream applications are lodged with the support of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen relative, and Home Affairs may require a financial security bond before the visa is granted.

Applicants must satisfy the genuine temporary entrant requirement, meet health and character requirements, and show access to adequate funds for the stay. The visa does not permit work in Australia, and study is limited to a maximum of three months. Periods of stay (3, 6 or 12 months) are decided case by case. Any document not in English submitted to support the application — for example passports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, bank statements, employment letters, or invitation letters — should be accompanied by a NAATI-certified English translation.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few of the issues we most often see with documents prepared for visa applications.

    • Submitting uncertified or self-translated documents — Australian authorities generally require NAATI-certified translations for documents not in English.

    • Providing incomplete translations that omit stamps, seals or marginal notes from the original document.

    • Using documents that have expired or been superseded (for example, an old passport bio page).

    • Submitting low-quality scans or photos where text is partially unreadable.

    • Mismatched names across documents without a supporting change-of-name certificate or statutory declaration.

    • Missing pages — translators can only certify what they can clearly see.
