Bridging visas allow people to remain lawfully in Australia while a substantive visa application or appeal is being decided. They are usually granted automatically and have specific conditions that vary by type.
Bridging visas allow visa applicants to remain lawfully in Australia while their substantive visa application, review, or appeal is being decided. The main types are: Bridging Visa A (BVA) — granted automatically when a valid substantive visa application is lodged while the applicant is in Australia. Cannot be used to re-enter Australia if the holder travels overseas. Bridging Visa B (BVB) — allows the holder to travel outside Australia and return while their application is decided. Must be applied for before travelling.
Bridging Visa C (BVC) — for applicants who lodge a valid application after their substantive visa has expired. Generally does not include travel or work rights unless specifically approved. Bridging Visa E (BVE) — for people who are unlawful non-citizens or whose bridging visa has ceased, allowing them to remain lawfully while arrangements are made.
Certified translations for bridging visas: bridging visas themselves rarely require translated documents — but the underlying substantive application almost always does. Any supporting documents for the substantive application that are not in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation.
