What the decision maker needs from Hindi-language applicants

Partner visas require certified evidence of identity, relationship, character and the end of any previous marriage. Missing or inconsistent translations are one of the most common causes of a request for further information.

    • Birth certificate for both the applicant and, where relevant, the sponsor
    • Registered marriage certificate — the civil registration, not the ceremony record
    • Divorce decree where either partner was previously married
    • Police clearance for every country of residence of 12 months or more
    • Passport bio-data page where the name spelling differs from the civil records
    • Relationship evidence such as leases, joint accounts, remittances and family statements

    NAATI Certification

What is a NAATI Certified Translation?

Every document in the bundle is translated by a NAATI-certified translator and carries the stamp, signature and certification number Australian agencies require. Because one translator handles your bundle, names, dates and institution names are rendered identically on every page — which is exactly what a case officer or assessor checks first.

    • Commonly required for Department of Home Affairs applications
    • Used for university, government and employment submissions
    • Includes the translator's certification statement and details

    Frequently asked questions

What the decision maker is assessing

A partner visa case officer is assessing whether the relationship is genuine and continuing across four statutory aspects: the financial aspects of the relationship, the nature of the household, the social context, and the nature of the commitment. Translated documents feed all four, so a marriage certificate on its own is never the whole answer.

Documents most often translated for this pathway

    • Marriage certificate, or evidence of a registered relationship, from the civil registry
    • Birth certificates for both partners and for any children of the relationship
    • Divorce or death documents ending any previous marriage, with the finality endorsement
    • Police clearance certificates from every country of 12 months' residence in the last 10 years
    • Joint financial documents — bank statements, leases, utility accounts
    • Statutory declarations and supporting letters written in another language

    Hindi specifics for this application

Indian partner visa files usually pair a Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act certificate with both parties' birth certificates and a Regional Passport Office PCC. Where a previous marriage ended, Home Affairs wants the Family Court decree, not a community or panchayat document. Name consistency matters: the Devanagari certificate, the passport spelling and the Australian form should be checked against each other, and any difference raised with the organisation receiving the documents rather than silently harmonised.

Hindi is written in Devanagari, so every name has to be transliterated rather than copied. The same name can legitimately appear as Kumari, Kumaree or Kumarī, and Australian databases store whatever the passport machine-readable zone holds. North Indian records often use a father's name or husband's name field instead of a surname, and many older certificates show only a given name with 'S/o' or 'D/o' followed by the father's name. We reproduce the Devanagari exactly and render names as recorded; where a spelling differs from your passport, flag it with your order and check the receiving organisation's supporting-evidence requirements. Dates run day/month/year; certificates issued before the 1990s sometimes carry a Vikram Samvat date alongside the Gregorian one, and both are rendered.

    Order of work and timing

Order police certificates last, because they expire; order civil registry extracts first, because reissue can take weeks. Translate the identity documents before you draft the relationship statement, so the names and dates in your statement match the certified translations exactly.

    Where these applications stall

    • A prior marriage that ended by court order where only the judgment, not the finality endorsement, was translated
    • Names spelled differently across the marriage certificate, the passport and the sponsor's Australian documents
    • Relationship evidence in another language uploaded untranslated, which a case officer cannot give weight to
    • Uploading only the front of a digitally signed certificate and omitting the QR code, verification URL or MEA apostille sticker, which breaks the verification chain a case officer expects
    • A father's-name field on the Indian certificate being treated as a surname on the Australian form, producing an avoidable name-discrepancy request
