Why your Punjabi degree certificate must be translated

A degree or diploma certificate proves the award itself, and assessing authorities require it in certified English alongside the transcript before they will recognise the qualification.

    • Required for skills assessment by VETASSESS, ACS, Engineers Australia and TRA
    • Needed for admission to Australian postgraduate courses
    • Supports skilled visa points claims for overseas qualifications
    • Requested by employers and professional registration bodies
    • Renders the award, the discipline, the class or division and the conferral date
    • Distinguishes a provisional certificate from a convocation certificate

    Frequently asked questions

Who issues a degree certificate in India (Punjab) and Pakistan

Degrees and diplomas are issued by Punjabi University Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab Agricultural University, Panjab University Chandigarh and the state's polytechnics and ITIs. Trades applicants going to TRA typically need the ITI or polytechnic certificate together with the trade experience letters.

Punjabi documents from Indian Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are written in Gurmukhi and issued through the Punjab e-District and eSewa portals, the municipal Registrar of Births and Deaths, the Punjab School Education Board, and universities including Punjabi University Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjab Agricultural University. Land and family records — fard, jamabandi and the family register maintained by the patwari — appear frequently in migration and estate files. Punjabi records from Pakistani Punjab are written in Shahmukhi and issued by NADRA and the union council, and are handled as a distinct format.

What your certified English translation reproduces

Every certified translation we issue is a complete rendering of the source document — not a summary. For a Punjabi degree certificate that means:

    • Award title in the original language, followed by a literal English rendering
    • Field of study, faculty and the awarding institution's full legal name
    • Date of conferral and the graduation or register number
    • Classification, honours or grade of award where the certificate states one
    • Accreditation or ministry recognition wording printed on the document
    • Rector, dean or registrar signatures, embossed seals and security features

    Punjabi names, dates and script

Gurmukhi transliteration is the recurring problem: ਸਿੰਘ is Singh, ਕੌਰ is Kaur, but ਗਿੱਲ appears as Gill or Gil and ਸੰਧੂ as Sandhu or Sandhoo depending on who filled in the passport form. Many Sikh records carry Singh or Kaur as a middle name with the family name recorded only in a village or gotra field, or omitted entirely, so an Australian form that demands a surname produces a mismatch. Village names are routinely appended to the address and are transliterated, not translated. Dates run day/month/year, and Nanakshahi calendar dates on religious documents are reproduced alongside the Gregorian date.

    Seals, stamps and legalisation

Expect the Punjab government emblem, a registrar or sarpanch seal, a Gurmukhi signature and, on portal-generated records, a QR code and digital-signature footer. Documents intended for Australia are usually apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs after Punjab Home Department attestation. Older revenue and land records are handwritten in cursive Gurmukhi by the patwari and can be genuinely hard to read; where a field is illegible we mark it as such rather than guess. Affidavits on non-judicial stamp paper before a Punjab notary are common.

How Australian agencies read this document

Assessing authorities use the award title and conferral date to establish qualification level. We keep the original title intact and give a literal English equivalent rather than asserting an Australian AQF level, which is the assessor's decision to make.

Central to skills assessments for subclass 189, 190 and 491, to employer-sponsored nomination evidence, to postgraduate admission, and to points claims for overseas qualifications.

    What we check before certifying

Most delays are caused by the source document, not the translation. These are the issues we look for on Punjabi degree certificates and raise with you before the file is certified:

    • Singh or Kaur being treated as a surname on one document and a middle name on another, which reads to Home Affairs as two different people
    • Anand Karaj ceremony certificates from a gurdwara submitted instead of the registrar's marriage certificate issued under the Anand Marriage Act or Hindu Marriage Act
    • Handwritten patwari land or family records where the scan resolution is too low for the Gurmukhi to be read reliably
    • Punjab School Education Board marksheets missing the reverse side, which carries the grading key an assessor needs
    • Shahmukhi documents from Pakistani Punjab being ordered as Indian Punjabi, when the issuing authority, format and verification path are entirely different
    • Translating the diploma but not the transcript, when most assessors require both together
    • Claiming an Australian equivalence on the translation itself instead of leaving it to the assessing body
    • Older award titles from superseded education systems rendered as a modern equivalent, which misstates the qualification
