What the decision maker is assessing

Skilled migration under subclass 189, 190 and 491 is points tested, and each claimed point must be evidenced. The decision maker cross-checks your skills assessment, your employment history and your identity documents against each other, so internal consistency across translations matters as much as the content of any single one.

Documents most often translated for this pathway

    • Degree certificate and full academic transcript for the qualification claimed
    • Employment references and independent employment records for every claimed period
    • Police clearance certificates for each country of 12 months' residence
    • Birth certificate and passport bio page for identity
    • Marriage certificate and partner's qualification documents where partner points are claimed
    • Registration or licensing certificates for regulated occupations

    German specifics for this application

The Arbeitszeugnis is the core German employment document, and its conventional phrasing is translated literally so the assessor sees what the employer actually wrote. German employment references use a coded evaluative language: formulations such as stets zu unserer vollsten Zufriedenheit carry a specific grading meaning in Germany that has no equivalent in an Australian reference. We render the wording faithfully rather than smoothing it into Australian phrasing, because the assessor is entitled to see the original grading. For date and continuity evidence, the Sozialversicherungsnachweis or a Rentenversicherung Versicherungsverlauf is stronger than the reference alone, since it is an insurance record covering every contributing employer in sequence. Duties are usually listed in a Tätigkeitsbeschreibung section, and that section is what an ANZSCO occupation assessment is read against.

German uses the umlauts ä, ö and ü and the ligature ß, which Australian systems transliterate inconsistently as ae/oe/ue or strip entirely — Müller may appear as Muller or Mueller across documents. Dates are day.month.year, and academic titles are treated as part of the legal name in German records.

    Order of work and timing

Qualifications and employment records are translated first because the skills assessment depends on them, and the skills assessment must be positive before the EOI can be lodged. Police certificates are ordered after the invitation, so they remain current when the case officer reaches the file.

    Where these applications stall

    • Employment dates in the translated reference conflicting with the independent contribution record
    • Claiming partner points without translating the partner's qualification and English evidence
    • A skills assessment obtained on one spelling of your name and a visa lodged on another
    • Umlaut transliteration differing between the passport MRZ and the certificate, producing an apparent name mismatch
    • An Abschrift aus dem Familienbuch used where the agency wanted a current Geburtsurkunde
